Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters acquire veteran experience in Ryan Skytt

The Kimberley Dynamiters have added veteran experience to their lineup as they acquired forward Ryan Skytt from the Columbia Valley Rockies, in exchange for Connor Zdan.

"An opportunity came up to acquire a player that we have liked for a long time, who has been a thorn in our side when we play him" head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "Unfortunately we had to give up a good player."

Skytt hails from Drumheller, AB and was in his third season with the Rockies. In 98 career KIJHL games, he has 33 goals and 34 assists. Skytt helped the Rockies get into the second round of the playoffs last year, scoring six goals in 11 playoff games.

"He was [the Rockies] best player against us last year in the playoffs.

"We really like his ability to take faceoffs, and go on the penalty kill. The experience and the strength gives us a little more security in veteran forwards.

Skytt learned about the possibility of the trade via text message while at work. He said he knew the trade was going to happen, he was just waiting for it to be official.

"I don't think I have won a game in the Kimberley [Civic Centre] before." Skytt said, saying how often the Nitros have manhandled opponents, "I'm excited to be on the other side of that."

Zdan is in his inaugural season in the KIJHL. He has played in 15 games, and his five points on the season came in the first four games of the year. Zdan will have an opportunity to shine on the power play line in Columbia Valley for the remainder of this season, and potentially two more after that.

This is the second season in a row where the Nitros have acquired a player from their divisional rival

"We are in a position to seriously consider making a run for the championship again," Stuart said, "adding a guy like Ryan makes us a better hockey club.

"We are just excited to get a guy like that, it doesn't matter what team he comes from."

Skytt is expected to be in the Dynamiters lineup next weekend when the Nitros host the Nelson Leafs on December 7th.

The Rockies and Dynamiters play each other next on December 15th, when the Rockies come to town.

The trade was made before the December 1st roster deadline. On the first, teams need to be down to 25 players and open cards. The Dynamiters currently sit at 23, which is the maximum for the January 10th roster deadline.

"We are very happy with the 23 guys that we have right now."

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters complete the comeback in OT winning 4-3 over Beaver Valley Nitehawks

The Kimberley Dynamiters had a lone game this past weekend and celebrated the conclusion of the Kidney Cancer Jerseys.

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks came to Kimberley in search of earning their coach, Terry Jones, his 1,000th win.

The Nitros, on a 10-game win streak, wanted to remain undefeated in their Kidney Cancer jerseys.

Prior to game start, there was a fundraiser dinner, and the start of silent auction bids. All for Kidney Cancer Canada.

To say thank you to Cliff Boychuck, who organized this fundraiser, he and several others were out at centre ice for a ceremonial puck drop.

Boychuck was joined by: Al Coates, former Calgary Flames general manager and supporter of the fundraiser; Kara and Shayla, Norma Ennis' daughters; and Nitros team president, James Leroux.

Once the puck dropped to start the game, it quickly became apparent that the Beaver Valley Nitehawks needed few opportunities to capitalize on scoring, and that they wanted that 1,000th win. The Nitehawks scored two goals on five shots in the first.

Up 2-0 to start the second, the Nitehawks continued with their scoring touch. Adding their third of the game, and sending goalie Brett Anderson to the bench, as Adam Andersen came in as relief.

With 26 seconds left in the second, the puck had squeezed past the Nitehawks keeper, but not across the line, and Brock Palmer dove to hit the puck across the line. They were back in the game.

A mere 25 seconds into the third period Mitch Fargey scored from the point to get the Nitros to within one.

As the period went along, there was a point shot by Tyson Meier that deflected towards the ceiling, most players lost sight of the puck, except for Brady Daniels. When the puck finally landed back on the ice, he was able to shoot it in to tie the game at three.

"They didn't change anything, they didn't panic." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart recalled. "I really thought all three periods we played the same way, we just got rewarded in the third."

For the second game in a row, the Nitros would need extra time to find a winner.

Cam Russell busted into the Nitehawks end, missed on his shot attempt. He collected he puck up again, and found Mitch Fargey in the slot. Fargey one-timed it, scoring the game winning goal.

"It was obviously a good feeling. I don't score a lot of OT winners, so when it happens it was nice." Fargey said. "I want to

The Dynamiters went undefeated in their Kidney Cancer jerseys, and have now won 11 in a row.

"I really liked how the guys stuck with the game plan, stuck to the systems, and finally got rewarded with some bounces in the third." Stuart said summarizing the game, "If we play like that, we won't loose too many hockey games."

The Nitros have one game left to win in November to have a clean slate for the month, and that's this Friday when they travel to Creston to play the Thunder Cats.

Stuart says the team is aware of their winning streak, but added "we are just trying to win our next hockey game."

The Nitros haven't played Creston since October 19, winning 7-1. This will be their first game in Creston this season.

MATCH STICKS: The total amount raised for Kidney Cancer Canada was $15,300.

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters find ways to win to keep streak alive

The Kimberley Dynamiters took their winning streak on the road to the Okanagan Division this past weekend.

On Friday, the Dynamiters had a case of the bus legs in the first period against the Princeton Posse, as the bus arrived moments before the game started.

"We spent nine hours on the bus, and got out and played right away." Assistant coach Jeff Kiever said. "We didn't bring our 'A' game."

Despite the bus legs, Nitros Spencer Kennedy scored on the power play to give the team 1-0 lead after the first.

To start the second, the Posse took advantage of a scramble play to level the game at one.

Cam Russell scored the Nitros second goal on the power play to close out the second 2-1.

The Nitros got their speed back in the third, scoring two goals 1:52 apart. Brady Daniels scored the third goal, and Bryce McDonald scored the fourth.

During McDonald's goal he found himself unbalanced trying to score the goal, getting his legs tied up and going feet first into the boards. McDonald sustained a broken right ankle on the play.

"It was an unfortunate event. The boys and the coaching staff were rattled." Kiever said recalling going out on to the ice with McDonald, "We didn't have our trainer with us....

"Their trainer was on the ice, and when we realized it was a significant injury, one of us needed needed to go out there for emotional support... I decided to go out there."

Brandt Bertoia recalled with sadness, "After he tried getting up, and fell back down again, that's when it struck me that 'oh no, he's hurt.'"

"It was really really sad. It sucks because he is a 20 year old this year, all you want to do is play hockey.

"A freak accident like that happens to him, it really hurt the boys. They boys are all feeling for him."

The remainder of the game was emotionless, Kiever said.

Brett Anderson made 22 saves as the Dynamiters won their ninth in a row, 4-1.

"We didn't have our 'A' game." Brock Palmer said, "but our effort was there to get us the win."

The Dynamiters spent their Saturday at the BC Hall of Fame and checking out the Penticton Vees venue.

Then the Nitros traveled to Summerland to play the Steam.

After an initial 10 minute checking each other out segment, the defensive lid on the game came off.

The Dynamiters scored to power play goals, Jackson Bohan started the scoring, then Keegan McDowell.

The two goal lead lasted 14 seconds as the steam got one back. Two minutes later, it was a two-all game.

Heading into the second, Bertoia gave the Dynamiters a one goal lead. To only have it erased by the Steam on the power play.

Braiden Koran rounded out the scoring in the second, giving the Nitros a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.

To start the third, the Steam scored three goals in a row, two of them on the power play.

With three minutes left in the period, the Nitros pulled goaltender Adam Andersen.

At the 2:06 remaining mark, Cam Russell brought the Nitros to within one scoring on the power play.

The Dynamiters continued to play with the net empty, and earned another power play. With a dozen seconds left, there was a scramble faceoff that Palmer was able to find the loose puck on, and tie the game 6-6 with 10 seconds left.

"Scoring two goals in the last two minutes to tie it up, is pretty spectacular," Palmer said. "I thought we did really well under pressure to force over time."

In overtime, the first five minute period of 4-on-4 did not solve anything.

Next it was a five minute period of 3-on-3 overtime hockey. The Steam took a tripping penalty, and a 4-on-3 power play followed.

On this power play, Palmer scored the teams sixth power play goal, and the 10th power play goal of the game.

"It was nothing pretty," Palmer smiled, "but it got the job done."

The Dynamiters won 7-6 to keep their winning streak alive at 10 games.

Reviewing the game, Kiever said "it was just a case where, we'd get up a goal and then take a deep breathe and let them keep coming back into the game."

"It was nice to see the way we responded and stuck with it."

The Nitros have one game this coming weekend against the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. Terry Jones, the Nitehawks coach, has won 999 KIJHL games. He and the Nitehawks will be looking to get his 1000th KIJHL win this Friday against the Nitros in Kimberley.

"We'll focus this week on making sure our guys are mentally prepared and ready to go," Kiever said, "knowing that Beaver Valley is going to be excited trying to get the 1000th win for their coach."

Bertoia sounded like he is mentally ready, "he's just going to have to wait, because it's not going to happen," He said. "As much as that is an amazing accomplishment, he will get it eventually, not this weekend."

Prior to the game starting at 7:00 pm, there will be a tailgate party as the auction for the Kidney Cancer Jersey comes to an end.

MATCH STICKS: The Dynamiters traded Nathan Bailer to the Revelstoke Grizzlies for future considerations. McDonald will be having surgery on his right ankle.

KIJHL Power Rankings: November 2018

Yes, it has been a long time since I last did a Power Ranking. Last time teams had played about 7-9 games, now teams have played 18-22 games. So my apologies. I underestimated how busy running a municipal campaign would be.

So now, here we are.

Revelstoke and Kelowna continue to dominate. The Kimberley Dynamiters have cracked the top three as one of the hottest teams in the KIJHL. The Osoyoos Coyotes have made the most gains since last ranking, as well as the Columbia Valley Rockies.

Going in the opposite direction, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, while still a top 10 ranked team, are the coldest team since last ranking. They are followed closely by the Golden Rockets and the Creston Valley Thunder Cats.

Here is the complete ranking:

Tuesday 13 November 2018

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters continue to dominate, win 8 in a row

The Kimberley Dynamiters continue to be red hot in the KIJHL as the kept their winning streak going.

The Dynamiters hosted the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Friday, and the Dynamiters did not bring their 'A' game at the start.

The Nitehawks held the Nitros to under 10 shots, and scored the first periods lone goal.

"They made things very difficult in terms of us generating scoring chances." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "They were a much more desperate team than we played in Beaver Valley."

The Dynamiters were held to 10 shots in each of the remaining periods against the Nitehawks, but were able to squeeze in two goals.

"We were down, but we kept our pace," defender Tyson Meier said. "It all turned out favour."

Chase Gedny scored on the power play in the second. While Cam Russell took advantage of a turnover for the game winning goal.

"It was a pretty average game from us," forward Brock Palmer said.

Adam Andersen made 22 saves in the win.

"Our goalies are playing shut down." Meier said. "They are doing a good job. Our d-men are shutting it down too."

Saturday night was parent night. After recognizing the parents and billets. The Nitros went on to blow out the visiting Grand Forks Border Bruins.

Keegan McDowell opened the scoring. But the Nitros peaked in the second, scoring five goals: Brock Palmer, then Mitch Fargey, followed by Braiden Koran, then Palmer again, and McDowell with his second of the game. After 40 minutes it was 6-1 Nitros.

"Getting two at home was pretty sweet," Palmer said. "It was extra special to have [my parents] in the stands."

In the third, the teams swapped goals. Brady Daniels and Russell scored for the Nitros, and this game ended 8-3 for the Dynamiters.

The game did take an ugly turn as there was a total 128 penalty minutes.

"We have a bigger, stronger, physical team this year." Stuart said. "Other teams are sticking with their usual game plan of trying to intimidate us, but get frustrated when we are just as physical or more physical."

Andersen was between the pipes again and made 25 saves for his 10th win of the season.

The Dynamiters have now won their past eight games. Outscoring opponents 42-9, while out-shooting them 338-165.

Up next is a road trip for the Nitros as they travel to Princeton on Friday to play the Posse, and then the Summerland Steam on Saturday.

"We need to keep it consistent." Palmer said. "Now that we know what we can bring every night. As long as we are prepared for the game, and preparing the right way.

"If the team prepares the same way we have been, I don't think we should have a problem this weekend."

Meier added, "the start to our game is really important. If we can do that, then the other team knows we are not going to let up on them."

Kimberley Dynamiters October Player of the Month: Brandt Bertoia

Prior to puck drop on Saturday's game against the Golden Rockets, the Kimberley Dynamiters named their Jewels on Ninth October Player of the Month, Brandt Bertoia.

"Brandt has been our best player so far this year." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "In October he started to get rewarded on the scoresheet."

During eight games in the past month, the Unity Saskatchewan native scored five goals and four assists, including one power play goal and two short handed goals. He was also named star of the game once.

"It feels good. Obviously, I had a really slow first month," Bertoia recalled, "so it good to get back on the board.

"It's a good feeling, I am playing with some really key players."

To keep the momentum going, Bertoia says that he needs to keep the same attitude and not take any team for granted.

Story: Kimberley Dynamiters continue to dominate, winning 5th & 6th in a row

The Kimberley Dynamiters are one of the hottest teams in the KIJHL after winning their fifth and sixth games in a row this past weekend.

First up was the Columbia Valley Rockies, fresh off an overtime loss to the Golden Rockets last weekend, but only trailing Kimberley by four points in the standings heading into the game.

The Dynamiters were sporting new green jerseys in support of kidney cancer, the jerseys are being auctioned off.

The Nitros wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Braiden Koran scored his fifth of the season.

Neil Kingston followed up with his seventh goal of the season, to give the Dynamiters a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The Dynamiters bolstered their lead in the middle period. Ryan Bennett got his first career KIJHL goal, and Koran scored his second of the game. It was 4-0 after 40 minutes.

"It was a great feeling." Bennett said about scoring his first goal in front of family and friends, "finally getting it off the back. Hopefully there is a lot more throughout the year."

In the third, just before the five minutes left mark, the Rockies got a goal of their own. Twenty-five seconds later, Brandt Bertoia got the goal back, 5-1.

That would be the final score as Adam Andersen made 20 saves in the win. The Nitros fired an astounding 52 shots on net.

Koran was named the star of the game with his two goals and one assists.

"It was good, I always love scoring goals." Koran said. "I was just feeling it tonight, everything was just going my way."

"We played we extremely well. Good effort from all the guys." Koran then added, "We are going to keep 'er going, all year."

The surprise team of the season, the Golden Rockets, rolled in to town on Saturday.

Again, the Nitros scored early in the game, this time it was Carter Spring.

Brady Daniels would score the teams second goal of the game. After the first period, the Nitros were up 2-0.

In the second, the Rockets pressured for the first ten minutes. The last half of the second period was all Kimberley.

Brady Daniels scored his second of the game, Spencer Kennedy notched his eighth of the year, and then Keegan McDowell got his 11th of the year. After 40 minutes, Kimberley led 5-0.

"It was pretty awesome." Daniels said about scoring his two goals. "It's good to see individual success, especially when the team is winning and competing all night.

"Pucks were going in for me, I'm pretty happy."

In the third, the Nitros power play started clicking. Captain Chase Gedny banged home a puck in the crease, and Lucas Chilton, #3, scored his first of the year at the 3:33 mark of the third period.

Star of the game, Brett Anderson would turn away all 20 shots for his first career shutout, as the Nitros won 7-0.

"I feel great. First shut out, it feels nice. The teams doing really well, we are clicking." Anderson said after the game, "we have really great goalie depth. We both gel really well."

After the game, the Kimberley Dynamiters social media shared that their past four home games have been against each divisional opponent. In those games the Nitros have outscored their opponents 22-3, and outshot them 201-74.

If that gets extended to the whole six-game winning streak, the Dynamiters have outscored their opposition 32-5, and have outshot them 263-114.

The Dynamiters look to maintain their momentum as they host the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Friday and the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Saturday. Both games start at 7pm and are at the Kimberley Civic Centre.

Story: Cam Russell returns to the Kimberley Dynamiters

The Kimberley Dynamiters have added additional scoring to their lineup as they announced the return of Cam Russell.

Nitro Nation reacted with much excitement to the announcement.

Even head coach and general manager Derek Stuart was excited with the return of Russell.

"Cam is a complete player with elite speed and offensive skills."  He said. "He’s an excellent penalty killer and very responsible defensively. Quite simply, we’re adding a guy who was one of the best overall forwards in our league last year."

Last year Russell posted 19 goals and 31 assists, good enough for third amongst KIJHL rookies. In the playoffs he added nine goals and seven assists, that placed him seventh in team scoring.

The 5'11" forward started the season with Calgary Mustangs (AJHL). He scored a goal in eight games. Russell says that he enjoyed his experience with the Mustangs, but that it wasn't working out as he had hoped.

The Calgary native now rejoins the Dynamiters to help them defend their KIJHL title.

"After last year, it means a lot." Russell said emphasizing the importance of defending the title. "It's going to be a good year."

He said there is one piece of experience that he plans to bring to the Dynamiters after his Junior A experience: speed.

"There is a lot of speed in that league. Everything just moves a little quicker there. The speed game and the mental game is a little bit different."

While there is anticipation to see Russell reunite with his linemates from last season: Brock Palmer and Chase Gedny; Stuart cautioned that won't happen, yet.

More to follow: Russell's reaction to returning to be added ASAP.
