Farewell Kimberley Dynamiters 20 year olds & college commits

A core that is been together for several seasons (some of these relationships dating back to the 2012/13 season) are now leaving their junior careers behind to go to college and start their life after junior hockey.

Tyson Brouwer - He has played in 94 regular season games, winning 66 of them while earning 10 shut outs, and posting a 2.33 GAA and .917 SV% over three seasons with the Kimberley Dynamiters. He has also played in 45 playoff games, winning 32 of them while posting 1.99 GAA and .933 SV% along with 4 SO. He is now headed off to play for the University of Jamestown.

My Memory/Highlights: I have truly enjoyed watching Brouwer grow over the past three seasons. For me, he made his mark when he came in relief for Mousseau during 2013/14 playoffs, his stellar play frustrated the opponent, and that's when I realized we had a fantastic goalie in the wings. He backed up for the Kootenay Ice, appeared in NHL 14 (albeit a right gloved goalie [poor scouting EA]) - which is a big deal for the gamer in me, and carried the team during the 2014/15 season to the KIJHL title. Not to mention I also have a framed autographed picture with a Ken Dryden quote.

Eric Buckley - He has left his mark on the organization, being a top player in teach of the all-time categories: 67 goals (6th), 114 assists (4th), 181 points (5th), 371 PIM (4th); all in 184 games (2nd). He also registered 18 goals and 14 assists in 55 play off games. He now joins the University of Jamestown.

My Memory/Highlights: He will probably be most remembered for being public enemy #1 in the KIJHL. So much so that the #BecauseItsBuckley movement was started. His gritty play annoyed every opponent, how grateful I am he was on our team. I'll probably remember him most for his personality, calling me out for not picking the Nitro's to win one year, and being a comical guy and the awards banquet (especially the latest one).

Jordan Busch - He played in three seasons, the latter two as an offensive threat. He has posted 18 goals, 109 assists (5th), and 127 points (11th) in 146 games (8th). He also registered 6 goals, 16 assists, in 50 playoff games. He now joins the Concordia University of Edmonton - returning to play home.

My Memory/Highlights: I'll never forget the chatter amongst fans that at the start of the 2014/15 season the backend had the most amount of question marks. Busch proved everyone wrong and quieted critics, by being a strong, confident, and calming force, not to mention his offensive skills as well. He presented as shy and timid, and I didn't get to really meet him until this past awards banquet when we shared a table. I'll never forget him saying "I never win anything!" then I mentioned some of the awards he just received, and he clarified that he never wins any draws. I'm excited for him to return home and play there.

Kenaan Haase - The Californian import. In two seasons, he posted 52 goals (9th), 54 assists, 106 points in 95 games. He also had 9 goals and 15 assists in 39 play off games. He joins New England College next season.

My Memory/Highlights: He was an unknown factor when he joined the team in 2014/15. But then his size and frame and offensive flair made this "Power Centre" an intimidating force. Not to mention his ability to win faceoffs, great for the possession game. He tried his hand at Jr A, and then decided to return to play in a league where he could dominate (which is always my recommendation). He did so.

Jared Marchi - He has left his mark on the team after five and a bit seasons of play. In an all-time leading 228 games, he has scored 97 goals (2nd), 117 assists (3rd), and 214 points (1st). To go with his 16 goals, and 31 assists in 70 play off games! He was an overage player this past season, and now moves on to life after hockey (maybe...?).

My Memory/Highlights: A local hero and fan favourite. Humbly working at one of the local grocers and then lacing up the skates in the evening. He has been a very versatile player to watch, being used in all aspects of the game. He was a leader by example. His non-flashy play made him an unnoticed stud. And it's because of that low-key-ness that my interactions with him have been limited. I know I will never forget the look on his face when his jersey was unveiled as a gift to one of the longtime Dynamiter sponsors.

Justin Meier - His stint with the team has been shorter than the other graduating players. However, he had 12 goals, 20 assists, and 176 PIM in 56 games. He added 4 goals and 13 assists in 39 playoff games. He is now off to play for the Univesity of Jamestown.

My Memory/Highlights: He joined the team at the deadline in the 2014/15 season. He was like a Tasmanian devil his first game. He learned to hone that physicality, and despite being a shorter player, he made his presence known with some of the best hits this team, and league has seen. He is a spitfire, and it will be interesting to see how that translates at the college level.

Jason Ricther - The captain for the past two years, and heart and soul of the team. He too has left his mark on the team, and who knows what he could have done with his one remaining year of junior hockey eligibility. He has scored 104 goals (1st), 97 assists (7th), 201 points (2nd) in 179 games (4th). He added 21 goals, 32 assists in 55 playoff games. He leaves to play for the University of Jamestown.

My Memory/Highlights: To me he has always presented as meek. Every time I have been in the dressing room, or near it, you can tell that he carries the wight of the team and respects that responsibility. He has posted some amazing numbers, despite being injured. He led by example, using his body to block shots, to get the team going and leading by example of how the game should be played. He is a character player.

Farewell to all these players who have left their mark on history, making their own legacy as a team. I am glad all of these players played here in Kimberley instead of elsewhere.

Farewell, also to the parents and families of these players. I know I will miss your regular interactions as we supported the team. Thank you for trusting our community with your sons.

Happy Retirement Coach Bancks!

Head Coach Jerry Bancks announced his retirement, read an excellent article written by the Bulletin's Taylor Rocca.

Every time I have been at the awards banquet, you can't help but see how much he cares about the players as human beings - becoming future husbands, fathers, and contributors to society.

During this last awards banquet, while not officially a retirement announcement, it felt like it for Bancks.

Hugs from Busch, after Bancks shared the story of how he supported a home-sick Busch during his first year with the team.

Hugs from Richter. Richter, as well as other players, lives have been impacted and guided by Bancks.

Bancks receiving a baseball glove from Coach Keiver, so that he can use his retirement to help coach little league baseball.

Coach White presenting Bancks with a piece of the Kimberley Mine. A tradition when someone retired from the mine
It was all capped off with a standing ovation (that he was surprised to receive) from everyone in attendance. He has done a lot, not just for the players, but for the community of Kimberley as well.

Two teams with two different playing styles in order to win. Kimberley plays a full 60 minutes of finesse hockey, while 100 Mile House plays a full 60 minutes of grinding hockey - both styles fit each teams arena.

The Dynamiters played their game in the first period, firing 11 shots to the Wranglers 3. Busch scored the lone goal for the Nitro's on the PP. A revenge goal scored on the penalty that was given after Richter was crunched into the boards. When Richter returned to the ice, fans celebrated, and the team found energy in that.

In the second, the dynamics of the game shifted. It was a scoreless period, with many saves by Brouwer and defencemen. Shots were 14-6 for the Wranglers.

The Wranglers continued their strong play, and with the help of a couple PP's, the Wranglers tied the game with just under 15 minutes left (the PP tally was with 1 second left on the PP). Then the boards that the Dynamiters have relied so heavily on to create chances, well, they created a chance for the the Wranglers, and they used the opportunity to score, making it 2-1 with 6:15 left to play. The 1,057 in attendance tried to help rally the Dynamiters, but the Wranglers thwarted any effort, and held on to take a 1-0 series lead. - It was the Nitro's first home loss this playoff.

Brouwer made 25 saves in the loss. Haase was the Home Star of the Game. Marchi and Hunt both had A's. Buhler, Trevor Van Steinburg, and Moser had several great energy shifts.

FYI, want to hear how loud it was, have a listen:

Game Two: Kimberley Dynamiters 4 vs 100 Mile House Wranglers 1

In an interview with Taylor Rocca, 100 Mile House Coach, Hladun, said that after their win he was afraid they poked the bear. And in game two, that bear turned out to be Richter.

The captain carried the team on his back, he led by example, and scored a hat-trick, as he helped the Nitro's to a 4-1 victory. It also appears that the line change of swapping Chabot with Wit paid dividends. Chabot had two helpers and Wit 1G 1A.

The Dynamiters had a 2-0 lead after 1 period. It took the Wranglers 45 seconds of the second period to cut the score in half, before Richter responded with a goal of his own. This fan photo was shot just as Richter fired the puck.
It was 3-1 headed into the third. The Wranglers pulled the goalie with four minutes to, and they directed a lot of rubber and intensity towards Brouwer, who played aggressively, and kept the puck out (with the help of the D). Buckley rang the post with an EN shot, later Wit added an EN, and the game ended 4-1.

Brouwer made 29 saves for the W. Richter was the home player of the game. Doell, Busch and Marchi added a helper each.

Buhler got the worst of his own hit as he left the game, never returned, and reports are that his season is done. His intensity will be missed, he was entertaining to watch.

Richter was given 2+10, and ironically is a top PIM player on the team, it will be interesting to see the implications of this on the next game. (I understand that Richter may need to serve the remainder of his 10 minutes at the start of game three - we will see)

The series now shifts to 100 Mile House for three games.

Game Three: Kimberley Dynamiters 2 at 100 Mile House Wranglers 5
Depending if you bleed Dynamiter Red or Wrangler Blue, the officials in this game were either your best friend or your enemy.

A total of seven goals were scored in this game, what's amazing is that they were all scored in the back-end 40 minutes of play, five in the last 20.

The opening period was a goaltenders duel, which Brouwer made many excellent saves. Meier left the game in the first and never returned, reports are he is done for the season with a torn MCL.

The Wranglers opened the scoring in the 2nd. Kimberley responded with a goal by Marchi from Richter & Wit on a 5-on-3 PP. Second ended knotted at one, despite Kimberley leading in shots, 22-11.

Then the wheels fell off, potentially due to physical exhaustion. The Wranglers scored four goals in the period (they took a page out of the Dynamiters book!). Busch (at first credited to Farmer) did get the Nitro's on the board, but it was too little too late. Wranglers take Game three 5-2.

Dugdale took a a 5 minute penalty and a game under the five minute mark of the third, which typically means a one game suspension.

Brouwer made 24 saves in the loss. Busch was the Away Star of the Game with his late game tally.

This game was played how the Wranglers wanted to play, physical bordering on dangerous. Not to mention special teams, which have usually been the Nitro's strength, is currently the Wranglers strength. Kimberley was 1/3 on the PK and 1/8 on the PP.

Game Four: Kimberley Dynamiters 2 at 100 Mile House Wranglers 3
Dugdale was suspended for three games, and with injuries to Buhler and Meier, Kimberley dressed an AP, Sterzer. Got to wonder how injuries will impact the series.

The Wranglers continued their strong physical play and their dominance on the special teams. The Wranglers opened the scoring with a PP goal 10 minutes into the game. Later they added their second goal. In fact, the first 30 minutes was all Wranglers, they scored their third goal just before the midway point. Marchi did ring a shot off the post this period, it is a game of inches.

Brouwer was relieved by Traichevich and then it was the Dynamiters turn to control the game. The Nitro's had 7 PP chances in the last 30 minutes of play.  They made a push back into the game with a PP goal of their own by Chabot from Hunt and Busch. Later in the 3rd, Marchi added another PP goal from Haase. The Dynamiters scrambled for the remaining 1:46 with the net empty, but they just couldn't finish, despite firing 40 shots on net. The Wranglers held on for a 3-2 win, to earn a 3-1 series lead.

Brouwer and Traichevich made 24 saves. Marchi was the Away Star of the Game.

Tyler Van Steinburg left the game and didn't return (maybe another injured player).

When it's the KIJHL Finals, the officiating is under a microscope. It's important to remember that just like how the league is a development league for the players, it too is growing future officials - so it's understandable, even though frustrating, that mistakes will be made.

The next game is a do-or-die situation for Kimberley. It's also important to note that closing out a series is one of the most difficult tasks.

Game Five: Kimberley Dynamiters 1 at 100 Mile House Wranglers 2
Do or Die for the Kimberley Dynamiters. In an interview with a radio station prior to the game, HC Bancks knew the Wranglers would come out hard, but wanted his team to secure the first goal so that they didn't have to play catch up hockey.

Tyler Van Steinburg, who left last game injured, dressed and played in the game.

As the Wranglers have done all series, give them a PP, they get a goal. The Wranglers took a 1-0 lead on a PP goal with 8 minutes left in the first period.

Tables turned in the second, as the Dynamiters had a couple PP chances. But it was Buckley, with two minutes left, who received a pass in the slot from Marchi & Hunt and tied the game at 1.

The third period was desperation hockey, and the officials whistles were put away. Kimberley needed a goal to bring the game back home, 100 Mile House needed a goal to win the championship on home ice. The Dynamiters had chances, but they were facing an incredibly hot goalie. Brouwer too was keeping his team in the game, with incredible after incredible save.

And then, sadly, with just under four minutes on the clock, the Wranglers squeezed a loose puck in. 2-1 Wranglers, their fans went ecstatic. The Nitro's fought back, pulled the goalie, and gave it their all; but time ran out on the clock and the Wranlgers became the 2016 KIJHL Champions.

Brouwer made 30 saves. Richter was the Away Star of the Game.
