KIJHL Power Rankings - January 13

I have received some feedback, and I will explain how my system works.

I use nothing but math to determine the power rankings, because if I used emotions, well, Kimberley would always be in the top 3 and everyone else in the Eddie Mountain Division in the bottom 10. I apologize for the length, but hope it helps.

To determine offence I use the teams goals forced average. For defense I use the teams goals against average. The special teams is calculated by adding together the penalty kill and power play percentages (a knock-off version of the Scotty Bowman Index). Goaltending requires a little more legwork on my part, I take the active goalies and add together their saves and shots against to create a team save percentage.

The lower the points the better. The most optimal team would rank first in all four categories, for a Total Points 4. The most non-functioning team would rank 20th in all categories, for a Total Points of 80.

The Hottest and Coldest teams are determined by subtracting LW Points (the total points from the previous weeks KIJHL power rankings) from the Total Points, giving us the difference. The highest positive number is the hottest team, the lowest negative number is the coldest team. I will admit I calculated the "difference" differently, but just using the rankings from previous weeks, but I feel this system really takes into account a teams efficiency.

So let's use the Kimberley Dynamiters as the example. The Nitro's have a goals forced average of 3.32 which is 13th in the league, giving them 13 points in the Offence category. They have a 3.17 goals against average which is 7th best in the league, giving them 7 points in the Defence category. The Nitro's are 17.93% efficient on the PP and 83.98% on the PK giving them a PP+PK of 101.91, which is 8th in the league, which is 8 points in the Special Teams category. The team has a 0.891 save percentage which is 15th in the league, 15 points in the Goaltending category. This is a grand total of 43 points, as seen in the Total Points. With their 43 points, that is 10th out of all teams for Total Points, so they are ranked 10th on the Power Rankings. Last week the Nitro's had 44 points, an improvement (Difference) of 1 point.

Hope this helps!

Now to the KIJHL Power Rankings! The Grand Forks Border Bruins are the hottest team in the league, and the Princeton Posse and Revelstoke Grizzlies are the coldest.
