The Nitro's had two games this past weekend and are still awaiting to see who their first round opponent will be.
Highlights:
- While neither Colapaolo or Buhler registered points this weekend, they sure were buzzing as they created opportunity.
- Bertoia with his additional ice time due to injuries, continues to show some offensive flair, and creative abilities, while maintaining his stay at home defensive role
- Brouwer won his 65th game in the KIJHL
- Dugdale and Clarricoates scored their first goals as Nitro's. Sterzer registered his first point as well.
It was the Braves last home game of the season, and webcast crew was hilariously giddy while dealing with tech issues to wanting fries in exchange for a movie. The Braves also played with their hearts out trying to give the home fans something to smile about after, by their standards, a disappointing season. After the first period, it looked like the Nitro's were dealing with a hot goalie who was going to steal another game, the Braves Norman made 21 saves in the first period alone! Clarricoates was able to find a weak spot early in the 2nd period to get the Nitro's on the board, assists to Rota and Sterzer. But the Braves responded late in the 2nd making the game level as we went into the second intermission. But then as has been the question all season, can you skate with the Nitro's for all three periods. The Braves, maybe tired or maybe a little to eager, got themselves in penalty trouble, and the Nitro's were able to take the lead with a PP goal from Wit assists to Haase and Hunt. Chabot sealed the deal with his late period tally, assists to Wit and Trevor Van Steinburg. Traichevich earned the W with a 27 save performance. Clarricoates was named the Away Star of the Game.
The highlight of this game for me was sitting in front of three scratched/injured/suspended (what ever their situation was) Ghostrider players. They were pleasant to my son, engaged in conversation, just overall friendly (and wisely sat on the non-beer side of the arena). I'm not familiar with the faces of the Riders to say who they were, but it was an nice perspective re-alignment.... they don't have horns or evil eyes, they are teenagers trying to love the sport of hockey while away from home, they just cheer for a different team. Impressed.
Dugdale scored his first goal as a Nitro, and it was a beauty as he took a feed from
Haase and
Buckley and fired it top shelf.
Wit continued his scoring ways giving the Nitro's a 2-0 lead in the second, assists to
Buckley and
Chabot. The Riders had to score a beauty of a goal to solve Brouwer.
Buhler dropped the gloves in a tilt where he was shorter guy, but held his own. Apparently, Burgess, who fought Buhler, never fights and that was his first fight in the KI.
Haase added to the Nitro's lead making it 3-1, assists to
Buckley and
Hunt. Brouwer got the W, his 65th KI win, with a 14 save performance in front of crowd of 842.
