Game One: Kimberley Dynamiters 6 vs Fernie Ghostriders 0

This game started off in Fernie's favor, but they were not able to finish their chances. Kimberley did score one goal (a PP goal) in the first by Marchi from Busch and Haase. But in the second period the Nitro's feasted on the Riders scoring three goals. Goals by Buckley, Chabot and Richter. Langelaar x2, Bush, Doell, Meier, and Marchi all picked up assists. Kimberley kept pressing in the 3rd and scored two more by Buckley and Marchi, assists to Langelaar, Busch, Buckley and Richter. Four Nitro's had a three point night, Langelaar, Busch, Buckley and Marchi.
I had a revelation before the game that Marchi has received little loving this season. He has accomplished heaps this season, and in his KIJHL career, but because he isn't flashy and does the work in a calm and collected manner, he isn't noticed. So props to Marchi for yet another excellent game.
Brouwer got his first shut out of the KIJHL playoffs with a 23 save performance. Congratulations to him and the d-line for a solid back end performance.
I gotta say, I came to the game child-free, and for me the beer section was just as distracting, if not more, than having my two kids with me.

The fear after game one was that the Nitro's would take an easy going approach to the game after winning 6-0 the night before. While Kimberley did open the scoring, the Riders always had a response. Bertoia scored the first goal, assists to Meier and Hunt, it was on the PP as well.
Fernie had a short lead in the second before Buhler notched up the game at 2, assists to Busch and Doell.
Kimberley got on the board first in the third with a goal on the PP from Buckley, assist to Richter. The Riders leveled the game up 10 minutes later and this game was headed to OT.
The first 10 minute period of OT did not solve anything, so the game headed to intermission so we could get a fresh sheet of ice. We spent all that time waiting for 90 seconds of hockey. Bertoia lobbed the puck out of the zone, it actively bounced off the boards at the blue line towards the middle of the ice,, going towards the slot, and it was a race between Chabot and Orser, which Chabot just won, and was able to tuck the puck in a open net.
Kimberley finished the game without two players Moser and Busch. Moser left the game injured, while Busch received a game misconduct for head contact and was subsequently suspended for two games (that's a lot of minutes to now be spread out amongst the D).

Game Three: Kimberley Dynamiters 3 vs Fernie Ghostriders 0
An unfortunate theme for the Ghostriders season has been injuries, and Orser was not in the game due to injury. While I have key indicators for winning the series, you can't rule out the factor of injuries on the series. It looked like Fernie dressed to AP's, one is Derek Green who doesn't play like an AP defenseman, solid guy.
Similar to game one, the Riders had the physical play and controlled the play, but just couldn't finish or solve Brouwer. It started in the first, but continued throughout the game, penalties. But especially penalties taken after the whistle - which would later impact the game.
Kimberley opened the scoring in the second. First a point shot by Doell on the PP, assists to Chabot and Hunt. Haase added the second goal of the period, somehow not a PP goal, despite scoring at 3:02 when the penalty was issued at 5:02, nonetheless, assists to Buckley and Richter.
The Dynamiters continued to dominate special teams, scoring yet another PP goal, this time by Trevor Van Steinburg assists to Farmer and Meier. The Riders pulled their goalie on a late PP, but the game ended with Brouwer earning his 2nd shutout of the season.
This game screamed team effort by the Nitro's. Scoring was done by various lines and each line was pressing.
912 came to the Civic Centre to enjoy this match. However some of those fans, reportedly Fernie fans, did not like the outcome of the game and tore down some of the fan made signs around the rink and then stomped on them. Just shows how this rivalry spills into the stands as well.

28 saves for 2nd shut out |
Over 1,000 crowded into the Fernie arena for a do or die game for the Ghostriders.
Injuries are starting to take a toll on the series. Rota and Haase were both out of this game due to injury. As a result of other injuries, the Dynamiters dressed to AP's for the game: Leroux and D'Etcheverrey.
Dynamiters opened the scoring with a beauty breakaway goal by Wit assists to Hunt and Doell. But that was it for the scoring for the Nitro's as the Riders played a tight defensive game. Kimberley did not have more than 9 shots in any period, totaling 18 in the entire game. The Riders scored two goals, one on the PP, and then added a cushion EN goal. Brouwer made 29 saves in the loss, who was named the Away Star.
Extra-curricular wise, this game was tamer than the previous matches. While there were three 10 minute penalties dished out, there were ONLY 10 other penalties.
The Dynamiters struggled on the special teams, going 0/5 on the PP and 2/3 on the PK.

Game 5 Kimberley Dynamiters 4 vs Fernie Ghostriders 2
A heap of fans showed up for a potential series finishing tilt between Fernie and Kimberley, 802 to be exact.
Busch and Haase were back in the line-up. Busch returned from suspension, and Haase from injury (but you had to wonder if he was operating at less than 100%)
I'll be honest, I missed the first period due to work, so when I arrived I was treated to a 2-1 Kimberley lead on the scoreboard. Haase and Wit scored for the Nitro's, with assists going to Hunt x2, Buhler, and Buckley.
In the second period the Dynamiters added to their lead. Farmer took a nice feed from Colapaolo (a name that I still cannot pronounce), other assist to Hunt. Later Meier rifled in a slap shot from Wit and Chabot.
There was this sense that Kimberley had enough of a lead to cruise and kill time to win. But an unfortunate bounce and misplay, and the Riders were only down by 2. However, the last 10 minutes of the game dragged on. It didn't help that both teams used their timeouts, and a fan fight stopped play. The fan fight happened in an unusual spot, on the untypical side. Since that was the case it took a while for security to get to the incident because they were on the OTHER side of arena. This has become an unfortunate annual ritual when these two teams meet. The Riders pulled the goalie with over two minutes left, but then a penalty against them, negated their efforts, and then a make-up call, gave them hope again. But Kimberley stifled the play and took round one.
Brouwer made 27 saves for the victory. Hunt with his 3A was the Home Star of the game. Wit also had a multi point night, 1G 1A.
