KIJHL Power Rankings: September 2015

Welcome to the first KIJHL Power Rankings of the 2015/16 season! This will be something that I try to do on the first weekday day of a new month, for the previous month.

How do they work?
The power rankings is an alternative way to understand how teams are performing besides the traditional points system.

I break teams down into four categories: Offense, Defence, Special Teams, and Goaltending. This is how each category is calculated:
  • Offense: Average goals scored per game, and then ranked accordingly. For example, the Kimberley Dynamiters are ranked 4th in this category.
  • Defence: Average goals against per game, and then ranked accordingly. For example, the Dynamiters ranked 2nd in this category.
  • Special Teams: Adding together the value of the PP% and PK% together, the Scotty Bowman way of determining team efficiency. The total is then ranked accordingly. The Dynamiters, as our example team, ranked 5th in this category.
  • Goaltending: The tedious task (I wish the KIJHL tracked total team shots for and against). Calculating the teams save percentage, and then rank. The Dynamiters rank, as a team, 2nd in this category.
  • TOTAL: This is the sum total of the ranks. So for Kimberley this is 4+2+5+2=13. The lower the number the better. The closer to 4 the closer the team is to ranking tops in all categories and dominating the league. The opposite is also true. The closer to 80, the more a team is drowning.
Current Power Rankings
Since it is early in the season this will fluctuate a lot until December/January.

At this time Creston Valley is the top team, while the Golden Rockets are on the bottom. It is interesting to note that the top four teams are only eight points apart, but yet 11 points ahead of the 5th place team. So they are a leading cluster. As for the backend, there are six teams that are eight points apart, so the tail is congested as well.

Any way, without further adieu. Here is the list:
