Dynamiters remain undefeated with a 7-3 win over the Rebels

In what was a calculated and tactical game the night before against Nelson, the Dynamiters had another circus game with the Castlegar Rebels.

In two games played against the Castlegar rebels, there have been 21 goals. 14 of them have been for the Nitro's.

1st
Castlegar opened the scoring. And then the Nitro's scored two. Then the Rebels tied it back up. And then Richter potted one on a delayed call. Giving the Nitro's a 3-2 lead heading into the second. The Rebels goalie was given a penalty, he took offence to Buckley and took him out (very Tim Thomas of him, not quite like Barrasso).

2nd
This was a let down period. There were obvious missed calls (again). Hits to the head, boarding, slashes and tripping, but the ref just let them play on. Not to mention after a period of 5 goals, 2 was lame, one for each team. There were correlations between the number of times the play by play guy said great moves and Rosolowksy.

3rd
HC Jerry Bancks is preaching fitness. What was noticeable last season is noticeable again this year, the Dynamiters can skate for all three periods. The Rebels had kept a lid on the Nitro's for the first and second, but the wheels came off, and the Dynamiters potted three goals in the third, despite only going 1 for 8 on the powerplay. The Nitro's held the Rebels to one shot during the period.

Nitro's Player of the Game
Marco Campanella. Scored the game winning goal, and scored an equalizer goal in the first, also had an assist.

Honorable Mentions
Alex Rosolowsky - 2G and 1A. The KIJHL also picked you as the Nitro's star of the game.
Tyler Garcia - had an awesome PK shift where he single handedly kept the puck in the Rebels end.
Jason Richter - 2G, including an individual effort
Eric Buckley - 2A and drew several penalties
Sawyer Hunt - 3A
James Jowsey - didn't show up on the score sheet, but had some nice moves on the back end

The Dynamiters remain undefeated, beating the Nelson Leafs 4-2

In what was potentially the Nitro's biggest test of the season so far against the Nelson Leafs, the Dynamiters won their fourth straight to remain undefeated.

1st
The Leafs opened the scoring in the game. Even though the Leafs out shot the Nitro's 15-5 in this period, the Nitro's still played well. Brouwer kept the Nitro's in it.

2nd
Garcia was on the receiving end of a nice set up to tie the game 1-1 (If your still rocking the bowtie, this should be your theme song). In what became a poor sequence of events, a missed high stick call against the Leafs, an icing that shouldn't have been waved off, the Leafs jumped into a 2-1 lead. The Dynamiters responded with another powerplay goal, it was a goal by Richter that caught everyone by surprise.

3rd
The majority of the third was a graceful period was the Dynamiters held onto their 3-2 that was established early by Prevost. That was until St. Pierre of the Leafs leveled a Nitro's player. There didn't seem to be a penalty called at first for the head shot, and play even continued for several seconds until the pile up stopped play. However, after the scrum, penalties were handed out, including a hit to the head. Prevost sealed the win with an empty net goal.

Nitro's Player of the Game
Jason Richter, he scored the game tying goal and really played his heart out every shift.

Honorable Mentions
Tyson Brouwer - 33 saves, showed gratitude to his teammates for the win
Eric Buckley - the KIJHL voted you star of the game with two assists
Jordan Busch - the Nelson webcast loved your patient play
Coy Prevost - 2 goals, game winner and empty net.

KIJHL Power Rankings - September 22, 2014

First off. We are really, really, early in the season. While the season is in it's infancy there will be a lot of changes, before numbers stabilize around December/January. For example, if the Dynamiters win a game 8-0 this weekend, that is going to have a larger impact on, GFA, GAA, and SV% than if it happened in January.

Second, where did the Osoyoos Coyotes come from? Averaging 8 goals a game after four games? And letting in an average 1.25 goals a game? Wow. I'd hate to play them right now. With those numbers, they are tops in the league, with Summerland, Fernie and Nelson on their heels.

Third, need a refresher on how the Power Rankings work, read here.

Fourth, how can I not point out that division rival, Columbia Valley is worst in Defence, Special Teams and Goaltending so far this season (again it is really, really early in the season, this could all change in two weeks).

Offensive outburst in first period gives the Nitro's a 7-4 win over Rebels

The Dynamiters outperformed their opponents for their first road game of the season with a dominating 7-4 win over the Rebels.

1st
The Dynamiters scored four goals within five minutes to take an early lead. Goals were by Klingspohn, Prevost, Hunt and Haase. The Rebels added two goals of their own, and the Nitro's added their fifth of the period, another goal by Prevost, before the period ended.

Note: Garcia was back in the lineup after serving his suspension that carried over from the playoffs last year.

2nd
The scoring subsided during the second, the Nitro's controlled the play taking 17 shots, compared to the Rebels 5. The Nitro's took a 5-3 lead into the third.

3rd
The ref and Buckley clashed, and Buckley was given a 10 minute penalty. The Roy, Hunt, and Prevost line dominated again in the third period (this is becoming a theme). Both Hunt and Prevost (a hat-trick!) scored the 6th and 7th goals. The Rebels added another goal before the game was out.

Nitro's Player of the Game
Well, this is a hard one to pick (sarcasm). Coy Prevost with the hat-trick and an assist.

Honorable Mentions
Jordan Roy - four point outing (1G-3A).
Sawyer Hunt - three point outing (1G-2A)

Dynamiters score six in a row for a 6-3 win over Columbia Valley

First, I must acknowledge that I was double booked, and only made it for half the game.

1st
Columbia Valley jumped out to a quick two goal lead. However, not even five minutes later, Richter and Rosolowsky scored to even the game. Wallace scored on the power play before the period was out.

2nd
Haase notched a power play goal, to give the Nitro's a 4-2 lead. Which is when I arrived. And it was evident why the Nitro's had such a lead, they were creating a lot of offensive chances. Moments later, Hancherow through the puck at the net, and Richter batted the rebound out to Klingspohn who buried it. Giving the Nitro's a 5-2 lead. I should note, that my son thought the Rockies logo was a Gorilla, and cheered for the "Gorilla's" for the rest of the night.

3rd
There was panic early in the last frame as Brouwer mishandled the puck while getting it for the d-man. However, Prevost saved him, skated a lap around in the offensive end before passing the puck to Roy. Giving the Nitro's a 6-2 lead. Which reminded me of an experience I had when I was in net back in Winnipeg... which Columbia Valley didn't like me sharing. The Rockies did score a third, and that was the final score.

BUT I have to point out a lame call with 43 seconds left in the game. A Rockies player tried forcing himself past Marchi, by ducking by, and therefore the Rockies players head bumped into Marchi, and Marchi received a major penalty for contact to the head. Lame call given the situation and that those are cumulative.

Nitro's Player of the Game
Coy Prevost. Had assists on the 3rd and 6th goals. Was a force in the 3rd period, the Rockies had to play catch up every time he got the puck.

Honorable Mentions:
Keenan Haase - eventual game winning goal, his first as a Dynamiter
Tyson Klingspohn - goal and assist
Jason Richter - goal and assist
Trevor van Steinburg - delivered the hit of the game in the third.

Dynamiters score three unanswered goals to beat the Thundercats

The Dynamiters opened the 2014-15 season, in new sharp jerseys, at home against the Creston Valley Thundercats. They provided an entertaining game to the 570 in attendance with a 4-2 win.

This game re-instigated the rivalry between the two teams, that ended last season with Creston winning game seven of the division final.

1st
The Nitro's seemed a little off, as if they were nervous. And I admit that I was nervous, and it seemed that the players were filled with anxious energy (i.e. Buckley, and Kinnon), Brouwer said he ate tums to deal with the nerves. The Cats jumped on those early nerves, and scored the first goal of the game. Richter, was particularly mad after that goal, because he missed blocking it. Seven minutes later, Richter got his revenge.

Jowsey (new to the blueline) played a 2 against 1 chase down perfectly, eventually sliding into the boards with the two Cats. It was a great effort to prevent the Cats from jumping ahead.

2nd
Creston continued to pound the net, firing 13 shots at Brouwer. Not to mention Fuchs and Kovacik running into Brouwer as well (no penalty). Fuchs also crossed check Dagostin from behind into the boards (no penalty). It took Richter getting a highstick in the mouth, that drew blood, for the ref to finally call something! (I admit he called penalties later in the period, but there was a lot that was missed).

Creston took a 2-1 lead into the third. (Side note: Dubetz beard reminded me of someone who should be on duck dynasty)... Another note, was that Marchi playing D?

3rd
Richter was on the receiving end of another illegal hit as he took a cross check to the neck (no penalty). However, beside that low point, the Dynamiters scored three goals to mount a come-back win over Creston. Hancherow potted the equalizer. Roy scored the go-ahead breakaway goal. Campanella put the icing on the cake with an empty-net goal.

Nitro's Player of the Game
Jordan Roy, he scored the go-ahead goal, and then later in the third, he helped lead an attack that kept the puck in the zone for well over 60 seconds. He was a force to be reckoned with.

Honorable Mentions:
Jason Richter - goal and an assist
Charlie Dagostin - delivered some hard hits
Jonas Gordon - I've never seen a defenseman want to shoot the puck so badly
Tyson Brouwer - 29 saves.

Explanation & Validity of KIJHL Power Rankings

I know in the past there has been some misunderstanding of the Power Rankings, and let me give a little history.

Explanation

The idea behind calculating these stats is to present statistics in a clear way when teams face off. Similar to the first hockey video game I owned on my PC, that presented teams like this.

So I calculate offense, defense, goaltending and special teams.
  • Offense is the teams average goals forced per game (GFA).
  • Defense is the teams average goals against per game (GAA).
  • The special teams are calculated by adding the teams power play percentage with their penalty kill percentage.
  • Goaltending is calculated by using the goalies, and by extension, the teams save percentage.
All these help indicate (a correlation not causation) of how a team is performing during the season (I have yet to figure out how to collect teams stats based on their past 10 games, which would help indicate where a team is presently at).

I vented frustration on twitter the other day about wanting the KIJHL to track shots on the team standings page, similar to how they track goals scored and goals against. Because to calculate the save percentage, I have to manually go into every teams individual statistics page and calculate the save percentage. This would be so much easier if it were on the standings page. Plus, we could then calculate offense efficiency by seeing the teams shooting percentage (goals scored divided by shots taken).

Validity

When I did the comparison post of Power Rankings vs Standings, I said it would be interesting to see how the Power Rankings predict for this coming season, to increase validity. But then I realized there is a whole history of stats on the KIJHL website. So I went back in time and calculated the Power Rankings for the past three seasons (2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11). For simplicity I will list key stats, not all the stats.

  • 2010-11 Season
    • Osoyoos Coyotes - League Winner, 1st in League Standings, and 1st in Power Rankings
    • Castlegar Rebels - League Finalist, 3rd in League Standings, and 3rd in Power Rankings
    • Fernie Ghostriders - Conference Finalist, 2nd in League Standings, and 2nd in Power Rankings
    • Revelstoke Grizzlies- Conference Finalist, 4th in League Standings, and 4th in Power Rankings

  • 2011-12 Season
    • Beaver Valley - League Winner, 1st in League Standings, and 1st in Power Rankings
    • Kelowna Chiefs - League Finalist, 13th in League Standings, and 15th in Power Rankings (Hello there statistical anomaly and outlier)
    • Fernie Ghostriders - Conference Finalist, 5th in League Standings, and 5th in Power Rankings
    • Sicamous Eagles - Conference Finalist, 15th in League Standings, and 12th in Power Rankings (And there is another one, you are messing with my data!)
  • 2012-13 Season
    • Castlegar Rebels - League Winner, 1st in League, and 1st in Power Rankings
    • North Okanagan Knights - League Finalist, 3rd in League Standing, 5th in Power Rankings
    • Golden Rockets - Conference Finalist, 8th in League Standing, 9th in Power Rankings
    • Osoyoos Coyotes - Conference Finalist, 10th in League Standing, 10th in Power Rankings
Observation #1
So as we can see, the for those three seasons, not only was the top power ranked team the league winner, but there is a correlation that the top team in league standings also wins the league title.
Observation #2
That was until this season past (2013-14) where the top power ranked team (Beaver Valley) was different from the top team in league standings (Kamloops), and the top power ranked team won the league title.
Observation #3
As we are learning with "advanced stats" at the NHL level, they may not predict the winner, and they are not the end all and be all, but they provide another level of depth of understanding a teams performance.

The first Power Rankings will arrive after two weeks of play. And I sure hope the KIJHL starts including shot totals on league standings!

Nitro's tie 4-4 in last exhibition game against Columbia Valley

The Nitro's played their last game of the Pre-Season on the road against the Columbia Valley Rockies.

The Rockies opened the scoring with a wrist shot that handcuffed McBain. Prevost tied the game moments later on a break-away. The first period was rather tame.

Penalties began to feature in the second period. The Rockies scored two quick goals and took a 3-1 lead. Rosolowsky (who earlier almost put the puck in his own net) scored before the end of the second period.

Marchi opened the scoring in the third. Campanella followed up shortly afterward. And then tempers began to flair, the once tame atmosphere was gone. Players continued to play after the whistle. Goalies were being stormed into. It got messy. In all that mess, the Rockies tied the game, and the webcast announcers were enthusiastic about it. The game ended in a four all draw.

The Rockies GM then released a statement on Facebook about his excitement about the team's Pre-Season performance. But if I may do a bit of math (cause apparently I am the Corsi & Fenwick guy of the KIJHL) to show why he shouldn't be excited. In four games the Rockies went 1-2-1, allowing 21 goals (5.25 goals against per game) and scored 16 (4 goals scored per game). It's going to be hard to win games with that many pucks going in the net, but I do applaud the improved offensive output. But... I just don't share the same excitement, hence why I predicted them to be last in the division.

The Dynamiters however in their four games were 2-0-2. They scored 18 goals (4.5 goals scored per game) and allowed 10 goals (2.5 goals against per game). If there is a team that should be excited about their play during the Pre-Season, it is the Dynamiters.

The Nitro's host the Creston Valley Thundercats this Saturday at 7pm for their season opener! Go Nitro's Go! (PS - Team will be debuting new jersey's!)

Nitro's tie Ghostriders 3-3 in exhibition game

The Dynamiters skated to a three-three draw in front of a home crowd against the Fernie Ghostriders. It is fair to say that the rivalry has been reignited. Line up here.

There were some solid hits, Busch knocked around some Rider players during the first. Brouwer committed highway robbery. But then, we also got caught going for big hits and nice plays that led to the Ghostriders first goal. The Dynamiter's also kept going for the skates of the Ghostriders goalie, and he was struggling stopping low shots, especially during wrap arounds.

In the second period, both teams swapped goals, and the Dynamiters took a 3-2 lead into the third. The Dynamiters had chances to take a 4-2 lead, having a 2-man power play advantage, and hitting the post several times. But couldn't cash in, and the Ghostriders scored and tied the game.

The game got rough in the last 5-7 minutes, especially after Wallace was injured (nice no call!).

Goals were scored by Richter, and Campanella x2,

The new reporter Taylor Rocca for the Townsman/Bulletin, and emphasis on him being a reporter, named the following three stars.

Read his write up on the game here.

The Nitro's have one more pre-season game against Columbia Valley on Monday. They have 28 players on their roster and will start the season with 22. So there will be a lot of heart out on the ice.

Nitro's beat Riders 5-2 in 2nd Exhibition Game

The Dynamiters played their second exhibition game on the road against the Fernie Ghostriders. Whenever Kimberley and Fernie play, it's serious.
The Riders opened the scoring, and took the 1-nil lead into the second. Then the Nitro's and Rider's swapped goals in the second, with the score tied 2-2 by the end of the period. The Nitro's scored three goals in the third to take a 5-2 win over the Riders.

Goals were scored by Campanella, Wallace, Hunt, Roy, and Haase.

The boxscore is still not populated, by RiderNewsKIJHL kindly snapped a picture of the score sheet.

The two teams play again tonight at the Civic Centre. Tickets are only $5!!

Dynamiter's win exhibition game 6-1 over Columbia Valley

The weather was fitting for the home exhibition opener as snow covered the mountains.

The Dynamiter's had a dominating game over Columbia Valley, scoring six goals in the first half of the game. Poor Taylor Rocca from the Townsman/Bulletin couldn't keep up with the scoring.

The Dynamiter's eventually scored six goals, and chased the Columbia Valley goalie from the net.

The score didn't change through the third, and this was the game ending tweet.

You can read the Townsman write up on the game, and you can also check out the (yet to be populated) box score.
