Kimberley Dynamiters win Game 1, 5-2 over the Fernie Ghostriders

Game one of this epic series, ended in favor of the Kimberley Dynamiters as they took home a 5-2 victory over division rivals, Fernie Ghostriders in front of 553 in Fernie.

But first, if you haven't seen this image of Tyson Brouwer and the Ken Dryden quote, it is awesome. If I had the original image file, I would print it, get Brouwer to sign it, frame it, and then hang it in my office - It's that good. Job well done Jodi.

Game Notes
  • Tyson Brouwer started against Jeff Orser.
  • Prior to this series Jeff Orser was awarded top goalie in the Eddie Mountain division, and Craig Mohr, head coach and general manager, was coach of the division. There are a lot of division awards playing in this series.
  • Injuries/Scratches: Campanella, Roy, van Steinburg
1st
The Ghostriders seemed a little flat footed to start the period. The Dynamiters capitalized on this as Saretsky scored on the PP from Marchi. Later in the period, Prevost was left alone in the slot and the puck bounced to him, and he wired it past Orser. After Prevost scored Henry the Rooster appeared! I don't understand this tradition, and the Fernie legend seems to suggest that it started over 30 years ago, and just caught on. There have been lulls, but it is back now by popular demand. The Dynamiters finished the period up 2-0, but Fernie led in shots 10-9.

2nd
The Riders got their legs back, and with the support of the fans in the arena, they started creating chance after chance. The Dynamiters took some penalties which gave Fernie even more of a spark, and in the last 90 seconds of the period, the Ghostriders got one on the board. The Dynamiters had the lead, 2-1, and led in shots 11-10.

3rd
Almost in unison around the twitterverse, and those watching via webcast, said "Where is Brouwer?" as Brody Nelson started the third period. Then after that, it was "Where is Hunt?" Both skated off the ice last period, but did not return. So Brody got his first playoff experience this season, starting in the third against our top division rival, and he did not fail to impress. There was a moment where Fernie thought they scored, the goal light went on.... but the ref pointed for an offensive zone faceoff for Fernie. It was puzzling. And then there was reference to a save in the press, and I wonder if Nelson (I couldn't tell from the webcast) made a spectacular save? But Fernie kept pressing and did level the game with just under 9 minutes left. It seemed like everyone was settling in for overtime. Then Rosolowsky sprung Buckley loose with an awesome pass. Buckley fired it in giving the Dynamiters a 3-2 lead with just over 4 minutes left. The Riders pulled their goalie, and just about as he made it to the bench, Meier stole the puck and scored an EN goal with 55 seconds to go. That didn't stop Fernie from waving the white flag, and they kept pouring it on with the net empty. Saretsky dumped the puck down into the EN and scored his second of the game.
