Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters make a statement with two solid wins
The Kimberley Dynamiters made a statement this past weekend as they downed the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and the Nelson Leafs in their own barns.
Keegan McDowell opened the scoring for the Nitros in Fruitvale, more on him later.
Mitch Fargey scored his second of the season, tying his KIJHL career high, to give the Nitros a 2-0 in the first.
"We had a really great start heading into Beaver Valley," Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said, "that was one of our focuses heading into the game."
The Dynamiters lost an edge in the second after Erik Delaire scored on the power play to make it 3-0. Former Nitro Luke Recchi scored, and moments later the Nitehawks got their second.
After 40 minutes, the Nitros held on to a one goal lead.
"We told them before the game, that if we would have been given a one goal lead heading into the third in that arena, we would have taken it," Stuart said. "We needed to make sure our third period was the best."
Brock Palmer scored 55 seconds into the third to give the Nitros a two goal lead.
As the third went on, the Nitros painted themselves into a corner as they took penalty after penalty, at one point giving the Nitehawks a 5-on-3.
The Nitros held on, and McDowell scored an empty net goal.
"It was nice." McDowell said about scoring his second goal. "That just sealed the game off."
Brett Anderson made 25 saves in the win, while McDowell was named the star of the game with his three points.
For Stuart, Lucas Chilton also stood out for his physical play and dominating the corners.
The Nitros night wasn't done. They had bus issues starting which delayed them getting to their hotel three hours late.
Next up was Nelson, the top team in the Kootenay Conference.
The first period was defense, physical, and scoreless.
"We played excellent," Stuart said. "It was a complete team game. We initiated the physical side of the game from the first shift, with two huge body checks from Braiden Koran and Erik Delaire."
In the second, the Nitros erupted for three goals. McDowell with his third of the weekend, Brady Daniels with his first as a Nitro, and Brandt Bertoia his sixth of the year, all scored for the Nitros.
In the third McDowell continued his scoring ways with his fourth of the weekend.
"That was a good goal," you could hear McDowell smiling as he recounted the goal. "I stole the puck from the guy at the blueline and went in and ripped it, and broke the water bottle."
Jackson Bohan gave the Nitros a commanding 5-0 lead with a power play slapper from the point.
McDowell would be named the star of the game with his two goals, and Adam Andersen would make 15 saves for his first ever career KIJHL shutout.
"It was a cool feeling. I have come close a couple of times and had it slip away. So it was nice to finally get that done. It feels pretty good."
"It was a huge weekend for us, to take those two teams down."
McDowell added, when reviewing the weekend, "we wanted to make a statement. Not only for ourselves, but to the league, to show everyone how good we are."
As for Stuart, he is proud with how his team is playing, "I am proud of how we are playing as a team, in terms of physicality," he said. "It's taking hits, it's going to the dirty areas. It's something that this organization hasn't been known for, and it is surprising and frustrating a lot of teams."
Next up for the Nitros is divisional rivals, the Columbia Valley Rockies and the Golden Rockets. The Dynamiters will be sporting new jerseys in support of Kidney Cancer for the month of November.
"These are two big division teams," McDowell said. "We want to showcase our team game against them."
MATCH STICKS: Risdon and MciLwain were scratched due to minor injuries. McDonald and Kennedy did not play due to suspensions. The Mark Creek Lions Club is continuing their effort of giving back to the community by giving two tickets away at McKim Middle School.

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters are wearing jerseys for Kidney Cancer in November
The Kimberley Dynamiters will be wearing an alternate jersey for all their games in November.
Cliff Boychuck, a Kimberley resident who has stage four kidney cancer, has created a campaign with Kidney Cancer Canada to bring awareness to kidney cancer, and to honor long-time Nitros fan Norma Ennis who died from kidney cancer in 2009.
"The cancer is still a long ways from being curable," Boychuck said, "and it is one of the least funded cancers due to its rarity."
Boychuck was able to find 29 individual donors that contributed $200 to cover the cost of making each jersey. The jersey's feature an alternate main logo, and have the Kidney Cancer Canada logo underneath the KIJHL badge.
The jersey's will be auctioned off, and all the money will go towards Kidney Cancer Canada. The campaign has already raised $5,850 of the $10,000 goal.
For Boychuck, he is thrilled with the support, but it also an emotional time for him. "It will be five years in January since my diagnosis, at which time my survival prognosis was five years."
To enter a bid, there will be tables with current bids at the Dynamiters home games during November. Bidding starts on November 2nd, and ends November 23rd. The starting bid for jersey's is $200.
On the 23rd of November, Boychuck has organized a tailgate party to announce the winners of the jerseys and other silent auction items.
If you are unable to attend a home game and would like to enter your bid, please visit https://nitrosfan.blogspot.com/p/kidney-cancer-jerseys.html for more information on how to enter a bid.
If you would like to make a donation to the campaign, please visit https://kidneycancercanada.akaraisin.com/ui/fundraise/participant/4570759 and make a donation there.
To see the jersey's in action for the first time, be sure to attend the game on November 2nd when the Dynamiters host the Columbia Valley Rockies at the Civic Centre.

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters add depth down the middle
The Kimberley Dynamiters bolstered their centre position this week as they acquired centreman Brady Daniels from the Castlegar Rebels in exchange for Hunter Maximnuk.
Daniels was excited about the trade, "it's very exciting, it's a winning culture around here." He said. "There is something pretty special that you can feel in the arena itself, the atmosphere is really exciting. I am ready to get started."
Daniels, who hails from Yellowknife, NWT has scored one goal and three assists in 11 games with the Rebels this season. Last season he had 23 points in 42 regular season games; and then added nine points in 12 playoff games.
"Brady excels at face-offs, is great on the penalty kill and can also chip in offensively." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "He was Castlegar's playoff MVP last year and an assistant captain this year so he also adds veteran leadership. We think he's one of the best overall centermen in our league."
It is expected that Daniels will be in the lineup this weekend as the team travels to his now former division to play the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and the Nelson Leafs.
Daniels says that he expects to bring speed and faceoff wins to the team, which he believes will result in more team puck possession.

KIJHL Clutch Scorers: October 2018
Measuring the clutch scorers is a way to see which players are scoring timely goals: power play, short handed, and game winning.
To calculate the top clutch scorer I use the following formula:
PPGx2 + PPA + SHGx2 + SHA + GWGx2 = Clutch Scoring total
Example, Spencer Kennedy of the Kimberley Dynamiters has 4 PPG, 4 PPA, and 3 GWG. So his formula is: 4x2 + 4 + 0x2 + 0 + 3x2 = 18.
I then rank the players by their total clutch scoring.
Above is an image of the top three. Below is the Top 22 clutch scorers, listed in a raw form.
Enjoy stats perusing.

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters make a statement as they down two division rivals
The Kimberley Dynamiters hosted two divisional rivals this past weekend, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and the Fernie Ghostriders. It was a successful weekend, as the Nitros scored 10 goals over the weekend to win both games.
The Thunder Cats traveled from Creston on Friday to the Civic Centre.
The Dynamiters made sure to take advantage of the Cats bus legs. They fired an astounding 22 shots in the first period. Chad MciLwain opened the scoring for the Dynamiters. The Cats did respond with a power play goal of their own.
But as the first period wound down, Jackson Bohan rifled a shot in from the point to make it 2-1 Nitros.
Brandt Bertoia opened the scoring in the first with a short handed goal. Three minutes later, MciLwain scored his second of the game on the power play. Just like that, it was 4-1 for the Nitros after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Dynamiters continued to control play. In the final five minutes of the game, the Nitros added to their lead. Neil Kingston scored the teams fifth goal, and Hunter Maximnuk scored a short handed goal for the teams sixth goal.
Finally, with 59 seconds left, MciLwain found a loose puck and scored, completing his hat-trick, and making it a 7-1 game.
"It all just came together at the end," MciLwain said. "It was a cool experience. It has a lot to do with the guys around me."
MciLwain was the star of the game with his hattrick and assist, while Brett Anderson made 17 saves for the win.
For Stuart the win was a team effort,"we were outstanding." He said. "That was our most complete game by far. I really liked how our third period was just as good as our first.
"We wanted to send a message after the second intermission that we are not an easy team to play against ever regardless of what the score is."
Next up was the Fernie Ghostriders. MciLwain had a checklist of what the team needed to do to have success against the 'Riders.
"We have to build off what we did [against Creston]. Keep banging bodies. That first goal is absolutely what we need to do. Keep going from there and everything is a building block."
Captain Chase Gedny scored the games first goal, and then things turned ugly. Two game misconducts were handed out, and two players left the game injured.
In the second, emotions settled, and there were very few stoppages. The 'Riders scored first, then just over a minute later Brock Palmer scored on a breakaway. After 40, the Nitros were up 2-1.
Palmer was excited to score his third goal of the season, "It was awesome. I haven't been able to get too many bounces this year, so it was great to see one go in."
The Dynamiters took penalties back to back, and successfully killed them off. Forty seconds after the midway point of the third, Erik Delaire made it a 3-1 game.
At the games end, Adam Andersen made 14 saves for the win. MciLwain added two more assists for a six point weekend. And Brock Palmer was named the star of the game with his eventual game winning goal.
"Our execution wasn't very sharp," Stuart said after the game. "But our work ethic was excellent. Our physicality seems to be at a level where it is very consistent."
The Dynamiters now head on the road to play the top two teams in the Neil Murdoch Division. On Friday they are in Fruitvale to play the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (8-7-0-1). Then on Saturday is a rematch of the Kootenay Conference Finals against the Nelson Leafs (13-1-0-0-1).
"It is quite possibly our hardest weekend of the season coming up," Stuart says. "But beating divisional rivals is a huge statement for us, and a confidence booster."

The Kimberley Dynamiters win in Castlegar, lose 2018 KIJHL Final Rematch
The Kimberley Dynamiters took to the road last Friday to play the Castlegar Rebels, and then came home on Saturday for a rematch of the 2018 KIJHL Finals.
Neil Kingston opened the scoring in Castlegar, with a goal 90 seconds into the first period. A minute later, Braiden Koran gave the Nitros a 2-0 lead.
"Our first period was probably our best first period of the year." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "We probably we could have had five or six goals."
As the first period was ending, the Rebels got on the board.
Kingston then scored the only goal in the second, and then scored his hattrick goal to start the third.
"I was fortunate to get the bounces right off the bat. A lot of credit goes to Bertoia and McDowell, they played excellent." Kingston said.
"I don't get too many goals. I don't think I have ever scored a hattrick before. It's pretty special, it was a pretty special night."
Brock Palmer scored his second goal of the season to give the Nitros a 5-1 lead.
Castlegar, again in the final minute, scored to trail the Nitros by three.
Adam Andersen made 26 saves in the win, while Kingston was named the star of the game.
"It was a complete game." Stuart said. "It was a copycat game of last Saturday. We were really good in all areas for 90-95% of the game.
"It was a good team effort, and the consistency was where it needed to be."
Saturday, the undefeated Revelstoke Grizzlies came to town. A rematch of the 2018 KIJHL Finals.
"The coaches were probably more amped up for it than the players." Stuart smiled. "It was the same organizations that were in the finals last year, it was a completely different team."
Similar to the game against Castlegar, the Nitros scored early. This time it was Brandt Bertoia with the tally.
As the period waned, the Grizzlies tied the game up.
Captain Chase Gedny restored the Nitros one goal lead in the second.
In the same pattern as the first period, Revelstoke tied it up in the latter parts of the period.
In the third, the tables turned. The Grizzlies scored first in the third period with a power play goal to make it 3-2. Unfortunately the Nitros couldn't get it back.
"We gave them power play opportunities for free. We were undisciplined. They scored two goals on the power play. Including the winner." Stuart said. "If we didn't take those penalties, we outplayed them, out chanced them, out skated them, and out hit them. We shot ourselves in the foot with the penalties.
"Hopefully we have learned our lesson."
Andersen made 21 saves in the loss, while Bertoia was named the star of the game.
The Dynamiters now get ready for divisional rivals to come to town. Friday the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, and the Fernie Ghostriders on Saturday. Both games start at 7pm at the Kimberley Civic Centre.
"I am excited to play Fernie and Creston." Kingston said. "We are going to have to bring it every shift against Creston and Fernie this weekend."

Kimberley Dynamiters September Player of the Month: Chase Gedny
The Kimberley Dynamiters named captain Chase Gedny their September Player of the Month prior to puck drop on Saturday October 6th.
"It's awesome," Gedny said about receiving the recognition. "It's a pretty big honour. I couldn't have done it without my linemates and the rest of the team."
During eight games in September Gedny scored six goals and five assists, including one short handed goal, one power play goal, and one game winning goal.
"Chase had a great September." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "He started off with a great month.
"He also led the way in the room, in practice, and off the ice. It was very deserving for him in many ways."
Gedny said that he credits his success to bounces going his way, along with hard work.
The Dynamiters head on the road to Castlegar this Friday, and then return home for a recreation of the 2018 KIJHL Finals with the Revelstoke Grizzlies.

Story: The Dynamiters participate in three team trade, acquiring Danforth
The Kimberley Dynamiters participated in a three way deal late last week.
The Dynamiters sent Luke Recchi to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. The Nitehawks then sent Dylan Kent to the Kelowna Chiefs. Then the Chiefs sent Noah Danforth to the Nitros.
Danforth is from Edmonton, AB. He stands 6'1" and was pointless in the eight games with Kelowna this season.
"We had been looking for a right handed defenceman for quite awhile and Noah caught our eye last Saturday in Kelowna." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "He's big, strong and can skate real well."
Recchi was averaging a point per game, five goals and an assists in six games.
"Luke should do real well in Beaver Valley. He's a good player and a veteran who knows what it takes to win. Trading him was a very difficult decision."
As for Danforth, he found out about the trade Wednesday. Finished the Wednesday practice. Then he went to his home in Kelowna, packed up, and hit the road early Thursday. He arrived in Kimberley on time for the Nitros Thursday night practice.
He said that he is grateful to be playing for the Dynamiters.
"They are former champions and recently have been winning a lot of games, so I am pretty happy that I went to such a high class organization." Danforth said. "I am glad that it is a nice town. I have heard that fans are amazing."
He says that his style of play is as a defensive defenseman and takes care of his own end of the ice.
Danforth made his debut with the Nitros on Saturday, earning an assists, his first KIJHL point.

Story: The Kimberley Dynamiters earn two wins on Thanksgiving weekend
The Kimberley Dynamiters celebrated Thanksgiving weekend by finding ways to win their two games this past weekend.
Before the game started on Friday against the Kamloops Storm, the Dynamiters recognized and hung a new banner for the 1978 Allan Cup Champions.
When the game started, the Nitros jumped to a quick one goal lead by Braiden Koran. As the period drew into its last quarter, Spencer Kennedy gave the Nitros a 2-0 lead. It seemed at this point that the Dynamiters thought they had won the game.
"That was our best stretch of the game, the first ten minutes." Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said. "For some reason we just cruised after that."
The Storm responded, scoring two goals three minutes apart. And the first period ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Dynamiters got themselves into penalty trouble in the second. Kamloops scored on the power play taking a 3-2 lead.
Brandt Bertoia tied the game at three, after Neil Kingston sliding poke checked the puck to him.
"Credit goes to Kingo for that." Bertoia said. "His work ethic to get that puck over to me, it was beautiful. If I didn't score on that, I would feel bad, honestly."
The second too finished in a draw, 3-3.
The third continued to have penalty struggles, both teams getting their fair chances on the power play, neither one being able to take the lead.
It wasn't until their was 27 seconds left in the game that Kennedy scored his second power play goal.
The Dynamiters squeaked out a win.
"There was some good segments. Some good puck possession in their zone. There was was obviously some bad segments each period." Stuart said.
"We have to remind ourselves a little bit more as a staff, that we only have five guys that are 19 or 20.
"We have a very young team. We have a very inexperienced team. They are finding ways to win right now, and we need to give them credit for that."
Adam Andersen made 26 saves for the win, while Kennedy's two goal effort earned him star of the game honours.
Bertoia said there was one area the team needed to work on before their second game of the weekend: discipline.
"Our discipline is not there right now. It needs to improve, a lot.
On Saturday the Dynamiters prepared to face the Castlegar Rebels.
The Nitros drew first as Chad MciLwain scored. Eight seconds later, the Rebels tied it up.
Keegan McDowell gave the Dynamiters a lead with a power play goal. The first ended 2-1 for the Nitros.
In the middle frame, the Nitros continued their scoring ways. Carter Spring and Erik Delaire each tallied one goal. It was 4-1 for the Nitros.
The Rebels started to crawl back into the game with a power play goal. The Nitros came back with two power play goals of their own from Chase Gedny and Bertoia.
The final score would be 6-2 as Brett Anderson made 22 saves in the win.
"We played a full 60, a little blip in the third." Captain Gedny said after the game. "Other than that everybody was going. It was a fun game to play in."
"It's pretty easy to play good when everybody else around you is playing good."
It was a team effort as six players each scored a goal.
"I thought we were very good for the entire game." Stuart said. "That was probably our most complete game of the season."
"All 19 guys that played were really really good."
The Dynamiters sit on top of the Eddie Mountain Division with an 8-2 record. The Dynamiters next game is a rematch against the Castlegar Rebels in Castlegar on Friday. Saturday's game is a recreation of the 2018 KIJHL finals as the Nitros host the Revelstoke Grizzlies at the Civic Centre.

KIJHL Power Rankings: September 2018
Stats analysis, my favourite.
Let's dive into the KIJHL Power Rankings, something that has been happening for nearly five years.
For those new, let's look at the categories:
Let's dive into the KIJHL Power Rankings, something that has been happening for nearly five years.
For those new, let's look at the categories:
- Offence - ranked by goals scored forced per game
- Defence - ranked by goals scored against per game
- Special Teams - The Scotty Bowman analysis, add the penalty kill and power play together for a special teams point total. Teams are then ranked by their special teams total.
- Goaltending - (the new website has some quirks, but something I love is that it has goaltender totals! I no longer have to manually calculate a teams save percentage) ranked by the teams save percentage.
- Total - is the adding of each ranked category. It's like golf, lowest score is better.
- Win Percent Rank - ranking of KI teams win percentage
- W%-PR - win percentage minus power ranking, a way to see how teams are performing according to their power ranking. A negative score is under performing, positive is over performing.
Let's use the Kimberley Dynamiters as an example. Their 4.75 goals forced per game is 4th in the KIJHL, 4 points. They have an average 2.88 goals scored against them per game, 6th in the league, 6 points. Adding their PP and PK together equals 110.61, 5th in the league, 5 points. The teams save percentage is .891, 13th in the league, 13 points. 4+6+5+13=28, that is their total power ranked score, which places them 7th in the KIJHL Power Rankings. Their win percentage is 4th best in the league, so the difference is -3. This means that the Nitro's are finding ways to win in games that they probably should not be winning.
Another difference example is 100 Mile House Wranglers, they are Power Ranked 4th, but win percentage is 9th, a difference of +5. This means that despite their record, the Wranglers are a difficult team to play against.
But few really care for all that analysis, most just want to know where their team is ranked. So here you have it, the full power rankings (click on image to enlarge):

Story: Kimberley Dynamiters split weekend trip to Okanagan Division
The Kimberley Dynamiters had their longest road trip of the season thus far, travelling to Armstrong to play the North Okanagan Knights on Friday, and then the Kelowna Chiefs on Saturday.
Friday started off as a normal day for the Nitro's, and then things changed rapidly.
The ice system broke down at the Armstrong Nor-Val Centre, and an alternate location was needed. The game was moved to Enderby Arena. The game was delayed until 9:30 MT.
"All of a sudden coaches said that we weren't going to be able to play there." Captain Chase Gedny recalled. "It was a big kerfuffle.
"It was hard. We were eating granola bars to keep food in us for the game."
There was no webcast. So Derian Bamber, who was scratched for the game, was providing updates to the Nitro's social media crew so family, friends and fans could follow along with the game.
The Nitro's didn't let the late start time or the travel get to them, however. As they scored two goals in the first. Goals were by Chad MciLwain and Luke Recchi.
By the midway point of the game, Spencer Kennedy had given the Dynamiters a 3-0 lead.
The Knights scored before the second was out. Then they inched closer with their second goal with 7:55 left in the third.
The Dynamiters Keegan McDowell scored two consecutive goals, one an empty netter, to help the Nitro's defeat the Knights, 5-2.
Brett Anderson made 26 saves for the win, and Kennedy was named the star of the game for his three point effort.
"We got a big two points after all that adversity," Kennedy said. "Which is good to get under our belt."
"It was a team effort. It takes everyone in the dressing room for something like that to happen."
The Dynamiters spent Saturday in Kelowna doing team bonding activities: going for a hike, and then a "friendly" game of bowling.
The Nitro's then prepared to face the Kelowna Chiefs.
Kennedy opened the scoring, with a goal on the power play.
In the second, the Chiefs scored the lone goal of the period.
The Dynamiters pained themselves into a corner to start the third, taking several penalties in a row. Three minutes into the third, and the Chiefs bounced to a 3-1 lead on the back of two power play goals.
The Nitro's did not give up. With the goaltender pulled, Gedny fed McDowell in the slot, and the Nitro's trailed the Chiefs with 44 seconds left.
"I liked the way the guys battled back." Gedny said. "Even at the end of the game being down two goals, there was no quit in us.
"This early in the year, that is a good sign, showing lots of character in the depth of our guys."
The Chiefs controlled the play to hold on to win.
Anderson stopped 22 shots in his first loss of the season, while McDowell was named a star of the game with his two points.
"I thought we played really well." Gedny said. "We had momentum, those couple of penalties took the momentum away."
"It was an even game. Anderson made some really good saves, same with their goalie."
The Nitro's took Sunday as a rest day, as they did not return home until 7 a.m.. The Dynamiters are now looking forward to playing at home this coming weekend.
Friday they host the Kamloops Storm, and Saturday they host the Castlegar Rebels.
On Saturday there is a bonus intermission activity where the mayor and councillor candidates will be curling frozen turkeys. The turkeys will then be donated to the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank. The event is being coordinated by candidate, and yours truly, Josh Lockhart.
Then on Thanksgiving Monday, the Kootenay Ice welcome the Nitro's for an opening ceremony to celebrate winning the 2018 KIJHL Championship.
