The Kimberley Dynamiters split high scoring weekend

The Dynamiters finished the weird month of November with a win and a loss. A total of 20 goals were scored during those two games.
The Nitro’s had a lopsided 8-2 victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies, followed by a 6-4 loss to the Fernie Ghostriders.
It was the first time this season that the Rockies came to play at the Civic Centre. The Dynamiters have only lost one game at home, and continued their impressive performance at home.
Dynamiters Captain, Ryan Hozjan, who was the Home Star of the game with two goals and an assist, felt that the team shouldn’t be performing differently at home than on the road: “I don’t think it should be [different at home] but it has been.”
The Nitro’s had a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission with goals from Connor Kendall and Nicholas Ketola.
Ketola continued with his hot hand as he helped build the Nitro’s lead, scoring the third goal early in the middle frame. The Dynamiters later scored their fourth and fifth goals 10 seconds apart by Korbyn Chabot and Ryan Hozjan.
Kimberley added three more goals from Caige Sterzer, Hozjan, and Garreth Osmar to take home a commanding 8-2 victory.
Mitch Traichevich made 23 saves for his ninth win of the season in front of 584 fans.
Head coach and general manager of the Dynamiters, Derek Stuart, felt that the team worked hard this game:
“It is something we have been asking our guys to do is to establish their work ethic first, so we are able to do other things. I think we did that again at the start from the first shift our work ethic was excellent.”
But he also felt the team rallied behind each other.
“This team does a really good job of feeding off each other whether it is a hit or a blocked shot or a goal or what ever it may be. The team builds of the energy that it creates itself. [Friday] was another example of that, we got a goal and the next line pairing that went out wanted to contribute and get a goal as well. It was a great job by the team feeding off each others energy.”
Ketola, who was recently shifted to centre, had two goals and an assist on the eve of his birthday, felt the Nitro’s showed the Rockies what they were capable of: “I though we came prepared tonight to play these guys because I don’t think we have in the past. We came out and showed them what we can actually do.”
He then credited his teammates for his performance: “I thought playing with my linemates helped me get those goals. They gave me a lot of breaks to put the puck in the net, that really helped out.
Hozjan sang a similar tune: “I thought it was pretty solid. I mean we haven’t had strong games against them in the past. It was good to show them what we are capable of.”
“My line was working hard all night. We were all getting chances and buried a few. It was good.”
The Dynamiters then shifted their focus to division rivals, some may even say enemy, the Fernie Ghostriders.
The majority of the game was even, with both teams jockeying for ice. The Nitro’s felt cheated of an early 3-0 lead when a goal was disallowed.
That wasn’t the only adversity that the team faced. During the middle frame, a whopping 82 minutes’ worth of penalties was handed out. This resulted in the Nitro’s having a short bench.
“We had a short bench with George Bertoia having to leave because of injury and three other players got game misconducts. I’m still not sure why the were kicked out, or Fernie’s for that matter.”
To survive the short bench, Stuart said “It’s just a matter of taking short shifts and keeping really really simple. When we did that, we managed to control the game.”
It was in the final ten minutes of the third that the game would be decided. Up to this point the Nitro’s had four goals: Osmar, James Rota, Chabot, and Ketola, but they were tied four with the Riders.
“During the TV timeout in the third we told the guys whoever makes the least amount of unforced errors in the last nine minutes will win it. Unfortunately, on their winning goal it was an unforced error.”
The Riders then followed up on another error and took the game 6-4 in front of the 1,036 in attendance at the Fernie Memorial Arena.
Reflecting of the game, Stuart said:
“A lot of teams can probably say this: a lot of the times that we do give up goals it’s because of our own miscues or errors with the puck. That was a major issue [Saturday], mistakes with the puck or in coverage, ended up in the back of the net. We need to do a better job of making them earn their scoring chances and goals – when we do that, we are really tough to score against.”
“It’s just a matter of taking better care of pucks in our own zone and making simple plays instead of trying to do something special.”
The Dynamiters prepare for a rematch of this past weekends games as they play the Ghostriders in Fernie on Friday and then host the Rockies on Saturday.
If there is one aspect of the teams performance this weekend that Stuart wants to focus on before facing the Riders and Rockies again, is managing adversity: “The only thing we need to do different is when there is adversity. When there was adversity [Saturday] night we didn’t do a very good job at managing it. We have to manage that.”
MATCH STICKS: Bryce Salverda (’98) has retired from hockey. With his departure, James Rota (’98) has permenantly been placed on defence. Cody Campbell was listed as injured, so Jaren Hall (’01) served as backup.

Kimberley Dynamiters prepare for divisional match-ups

The Kimberley Dynamiters look to close out the month of November on a positive note as they face two divisional rivals this weekend.

The Columbia Valley Rockies  (6-13-0-3) come to the Kimberley Civic Centre on Friday. The Rockies enter the game having lost their last game, and are only winners in three of their last 10.

The Rockies are led by youth, all five of the top scorers are born in 1998, and four of those are rookies to the KIJHL.

In net is Connor McKay, a goalie who has netted a goal this season, who faces an average of 41 shots per game, so don’t let his GAA foul you.

The previous two meetings have happened in Invermere, and the result has been decided by one goal, with each team winning one. This could be another close match up, but look for the Dynamiters to feed off the fans, as they have in the past.

The big test this weekend will happen in Fernie Memorial Arena as the Nitro’s take on the Ghostriders (14-7-0-1). The Riders are one of the hottest teams in the KIJHL. They have won their past six games, and have won eight of their past 10.

They don’t boast a league leading scorer but they have three forwards averaging a point per game: Mitch Titus, Justin Peers, and Ryan Kennedy. But pay attention to defenceman Alex Cheveldave who earns nearly a point per game, but is more known for getting under the skin of the Dynamiters.

The two teams have split their meetings earlier this season, with each team winning one game. This game will determine just how close the Riders can get to the Dynamiters in the Eddie Mountain Division standings.

As for the Dynamiters, they look to continue being on the familiar winning and hard to play against path. But also want to stabilize what head coach and general manager Derek Stuart has called a weird month with lopsided wins and lopsided losses.

Friday’s game at the Civic Centre versus the Rockies starts at 7pm. While the opening faceoff Saturday at the Fernie Memorial Arena is 7:30pm.

MATCH STICKS: Garreth Osmar has been removed from the injured list and is cleared to play. That leaves James Rota as the lone Nitro on the shelf.

KIJHL Power Rankings - November 23, 2016

It's been long overdue, KIJHL Power Rankings.

After two months on top of the league, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats look a little human now, as they have surrendered the #1 spot in the KIJHL Power Rankings.

The Osoyoos Coyotes remain tied for first, but the nod for first place goes to Beaver Valley Nitehawks as they are tied with the Coyots but rank 1st in two categories (defence and goaltending). The Thunder Cats round out the top three teams.

Even though the Nitehawks are the new #1 team, they are not the hottest team in the KIJHL, despite their +17 difference from last month. The Castlegar Rebels are the hottest team in the KIJHL with +20, then it is the Fernie Ghostriders +18 (second month in a row as one of the hottest teams), and then it is the Nitehawks tied with the Kelowna Chiefs for the hottest teams.

Headed in the other direction are the Golden Rockes, -20. The once hot Grand Forks Border Bruins have also dropped, -17; with the Revelstoke Grizzlies close behind, -16.

Here is the full list of rankings (click to enlarge):

Kimberley Dynamiters lose and win big this past weekend

The Kimberley Dynamiters continued their polarizing play this past weekend.

Heading into the weekend, the Dynamiters have been winners and losers in lopsided affairs, with at-least four goal differentials in each of those games. The pattern continued as the Nitro’s were downed 7-2 by the Creston Valley Thunder Cats on Friday and then won by the same score Saturday in Kimberley against the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

“It’s been a weird month” head coach and general manager Derek Stuart said.

The game in Creston is a result that the Kimberley Dynamiters want to forget. Starting goalie Mitch Traichevich was chased from the net after surrendering four foals. Cody Campbell came in as relief, but the Cats attack just kept coming, clawing in another three goals.

The Dynamiters could only muster two goals, one on the power play from Chabot and the other unassisted by Ketola.

“We got embarrassed last night.” Stuart said. “Straight up, last night we got our butts kicked and we deserved to lose 7-2, if not even worse. That was definitely what we deserved last night.”

After such a loss, the Dynamiters did their best to keep the game out of the front of their minds.

“We tried not to focus on the loss last night, kind of keep it in the back of your mind, don’t want it to happen again, use it to play our best.” James Farmer said.

“Tried to forget about last night, at the same time used it as motivation to bounce back to make sure we are hard to play against. We were just trying to focus on our actions,” added Franco Colapaolo.

The lines for Saturday’s match against Grand Forks also changed.

“We changed the lines up a bit. We had fresh lines.” Colapaolo said.

His new linemates, Farmer and Korbyn Chabot started the game and got the Nitro’s on the board in the first period, with Colapaolo getting the first goal and Farmer and Chabot both getting helpers.

The night just kept getting better for Farmer and Colapaolo, as both would add another goal and assist each to their game totals, as they lead the Dynamiters to a 7-2 victory over the Border Bruins.

“My linemates, Chabot and Farmer really helped me out tonight and made it easy for me. It was a great night.” Colapaolo said.

Campbell made 24 saves, doing his part to help the team win.

“I thought we were pretty solid in all areas.” Stuart said. “The work ethic was definitely there from the get-go. Once we established our work ethic we were able to do the systems we wanted for the most part. We were able to capitalize on some scoring chances. I thought the guys worked extremely hard tonight.”

For the team, it was a welcomed home victory.

“Obviously, it felt really good to bounce back from last night.” Colapaolo said.

“We are doing pretty good at home. It’s just great to play in front of our fans, we get really good support from them. And everyone seems to love playing at home.”

Stuart added, “we were a pretty angry hockey team,”

With that victory the Dynamiters are now 10-1 at home, while they are 6-5 on the road.

Farmer said that: “On the road you have to build your own energy, and that can be hard sometimes. At home you can use the energy of the crowd.”

“I know everyone likes playing at home, whether or not they are working harder at home as opposed to the road, I certainly hope that’s not the case.” Stuart said. “I don’t think that’s the case. I think that we talked about getting back on track and the first thing we have to do is to work hard.”

As for Farmer and Colapaolo, they both continue to lead the team by example. Farmers performance stood out on Saturday, earning him the Home Start of the Game.

“We just stuck to our systems.” Farmer said “I got a lucky bounce there and managed to put it in. On the PK, I just sacrificed the body for the boys. I know they would do it for me too. I’ll take [being black and blue] for a win.”

New to the lineup on Saturday was Connor Kendall. He suited up earlier in the year but was injured on his second shift with the team.

“Unfortunately, Kendall has had some injury problems last year in Jr A and his second shift with us in September he got hurt.”

“He came back, and he is fully ready to go. He played well. He’s a physical kid, he’s a big kid. He’s very experienced and smart with the puck. He moves his feet. He’s good at placing pucks. His experience and strength is a big help to our team, especially along the walls.”

The Dynamiters now prepare for their last two games in the weird month of November. At home Friday against the Columbia Valley Rockies, and then on the road against the Fernie Ghostriders.

MATCH STICKS: Garreth Osmar and James Rota are both listed as injured with undisclosed injuries and timelines.

The Kimberley Dynamiters want momentum to continue after downing Golden Rockets 8-0

The Dynamiters returned to the win column on Tuesday, after a short three game losing streak, with a dominating 8-0 victory over the Golden Rockets.

Rockets starting goalie, Ruslan Katsnelson, returned to the Civic Centre for the first time since being traded to Golden in October.

Unfortunately for Katsnelson and the Rockets, the Dynamiters fuse was lit and ready to explode.

“We were all pumped and ready to go,” said Cranbrook native Korbyn Chabot. “It’s been a while since we have been at home. Playing at home is always a great pleasure. The home barn gives you more motivation.”

Chabot and the Nitro’s found a lot of motivation and erupted for six goals in the first 12 minutes of the game, out-shooting the Rockets 24-4 in the first 20 minutes.

Head coach and general manager Derek Stuart was thrilled with the first period performance: “I thought the first period was outstanding. Our guys were hot. Execution wise, that was probably our best period of the year. I think a lot of teams would have a lot of trouble with how we played in the first.”

The difficult task, though, was keeping the players focused for the next 40 minutes with such a massive lead.

“That’s the harder part,” Stuart said, “especially in this age group it is very hard. It’s even hard for the coaches to stay focused.

“We talked about [staying focused] during the first intermission. It clearly did not work, because in the second period [Golden] took the play to us.

“It’s very, very hard knowing that you are up that many goals with 40 minutes left to play. We let them know that we were not very pleased with that second period. I thought the third period was a lot better.”

The Dynamiters added a goal in both the second and third period, rounding out the game to a commanding 8-0 victory.

Mitch Traichevich earned his second shut-out of the season with 17 saves. While Chabot and captain Ryan Hozjan each had 5 points on the night.

Hozjan had one goal and four assists, “Everything I gave to Chabot ended up in the back of the net,” he said, “it made it pretty easy on me. It was good to get some points after a drought. It’s a relief, but it’s only one game.”

While Chabot, who scored four goals and added an assist was just excited to be back on the ice after injury: “It’s obviously good to have a big point night. I couldn’t have done it without a few linemates: Hozjan and Davies – they had an incredible game. It’s just good to be back and in the jersey.”

Stuart felt that the outcome had little to do with Golden’s record, and more to do with his team’s performance: “They got results tonight for doing the things we asked them. I don’t think it was so much that we were playing the last team in our division.”

Hozjan added: “I think we got away from our style of play, being hard to play against. Tonight, it was nice to get back to playing our style.”

“We came out real strong. Our hard work paid off today. It was good to get the confidence back.”
The Dynamiters October Player of the Month, Chase Miller, was excited to end the short losing streak.

“It’s huge for us. We are not used to losing. I think we got caught up in winning, we had a huge win-streak. It’s good to get back on the winning side.”

The Dynamiters now shift their focus to facing the Creston Valley Thunder Cats (15-3-1-1) for the third time this month on Friday in Creston before returning home on Friday to play the Grand Forks Border Bruins (9-7-2-2).

Chabot says the team is looking forward to Friday’s matchup, and that it is simple to find the motivation: “They are our big rivals, so that gets us going.”

Hozjan wants his team to repeat Tuesday’s performance when they play again this weekend: “We got to get back to the way we were playing in the first 20 minutes of tonight’s game. I think any team we would have played against would have had a tough time keeping up with us. If we carry that into  Fridays game and play a full 60 that way, we’ll be in good shape.”

Puck drops at 7:30 in Creston at the Johnny Bucyk Arena on Friday, and then 7pm on Saturday at the Civic Centre.

MATCH STICKS: Defenceman Robert Thomson has decided to retire from hockey to focus on school. Troy Feldbusch was traded to Dawson Creek (NWJHL). With four gaols, seven assists, and three stars of the game, Chase Miller was named the Dynamiters October player of the Month.

Kimberley Dynamiters October Player of the Month: Chase Miller

Chase Miller was selected as the Kimberley Dynamiters October Player of the Month.

"It is a huge honor, we had a huge month in October. It was a lot of fun. The boys did really well."

During October Miller posted four goals and seven assists in nine games. He was also selected as the Star of the Game three times during the month.

The Dyanmiters were 8-1 during October.

"I was putting the puck in the net, my line did fairly well," Miller said. "We had a lot of good games and a lot of good wins."

The Kimberley Dynamiters losing streak is unfamiliar territory

The Dynamiters continued their five-game road trip with games against the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and Castlegar Rebels this past weekend.

First up was the Cats in a battle for the top spot in the Eddie Mountain division. The Thunder Cats opened the scoring in the first 20 minutes. Then they followed it up with two more goals before Franco Colapaolo got the Nitro’s on the board, making it 3-1 after 40 minutes. The score would then double in the final frame with James Rota scoring the second goal for the Nitro’s, but the Cats eventually downed the Nitro’s 6-2.

Overall, head coach and general manager Derek Stuart was pleased with performance, “I thought we were pretty good in a lot of areas that we addressed during the week in practice. The first period we started out strong. We had a few lulls throughout the game.”

However, the Dynamiters Achilles heel for the game was their net presence.

“That is what killed us, our lack of effort and pride in front of our own net. They made us pay with five of the six goals being loose pucks right in front of the net. They just seemed to want it more, they outworked and muscled our guys to poke it in the net.”

Mitch Traichevich turned aside 29 shots, and Colapaolo was named the Away Star of the Game with his goal and one assist.

The Dynamiters then took Remembrance Day off, but then focused their attention to the Castlegar Rebels on Saturday night.

The Rebels entered the game hot, winning their past four games, looking to win their fifth, with top scoring Logan Styler leading the charge. The Dynamiters were hoping for a repeat of their earlier matches this season, winning the previous two meetings, to end their two-game losing skid.

Early on it became apparent that the players were not going to be the leading cast in this game as the referee stole the show.

“It’s difficult that the teams have to adjust to the referee’s individual style of what is a penalty and what is not,” said Stuart. “As opposed to some sort of consistent standard amongst the referees. It was completely opposite from our experience last week in the West Kootenay’s.”

“When inconsistency happens five or six times in a game it becomes pretty frustrating for the coaches and the players. It was difficult to handle. It’s just difficult for everyone involved.”

After a back-to-back-to-back penalty filled, and scoreless, first period; the scoring started after the longest penalty free portion of the game, from 18:48 to 14:24 of the second period. There were grooves in the ice on the way to the penalty box as the Rebels had 17 power play chances and scored on five of them.

“It seemed like we were on the penalty kill the entire game,” Stuart said. “You give any team that many power plays and they will score some goals. Castelgar does have a skilled power play with a lot of veterans, they executed it well.”

The Dynamiters did get two of their own goals one from the Away Start of the Game James Farmer, and then another one a little too late from Matt Davies.

The Rebels diffused the Dynamiters en-route to a 6-2 victory.

Cody Campbell stopped 26 of the 32 shots he faced.

Stuart though was pleased with the teams limited five-on-five performance, “I thought aside from special teams, we were pretty good.”

“Our guys worked extremely hard, unfortunately a majority of that effort was spent killing penalties.”

The Dynamiters now shift their focus to Tuesday’s match against last place division rivals, the Golden Rockets (4-16-0-0) as they try to end their three-game losing streak.

“Losing three in a row is not a catastrophic streak, but at the same time it is something we are not used to. It is some adversity. We have to bond together and pull through it. It will say a lot about our character and our team as a whole how we respond on Tuesday night.”

“We have to go out and play our own game and get back to being a team that is hard to play against every single shift.”

Puck drop is 7pm at the Kimberley Civic Centre.

MATCH STICKS: Injuries continue to pile up: Drew Van den Bosch and Connor Kendall remain sidelined. Caige Sterzer, Tyler Van Steinburg and Korbyn Chabot have all been added to the list with undisclosed injuries and timelines.
